Schedule of Events: December 2009
Basketball Registrations: Registrations for the Recreation Department’s winter basketball program for children entering grades K-8 are closed. Openings remain in a few divisions; contact the Department for additional information. Registrations for our DARE High School intramural program close on Friday, December 4 and the cost is $60.
Youth Wrestling: The Recreation Department offers co-ed wrestling program for children in grades K-8. Wrestling is an ancient martial art that uses grappling type techniques such as clinch fighting, throws, takedowns, pins and other grappling holds. A wrestling bout is a physical competition, generally between two people, who attempt to gain and maintain a superior position. Participants will learn the basic rules of the sport and will be trained to execute most of the basics techniques and, in addition participate in conditioning exercises and games related to the sport. Most importantly the program strives to instill the value of discipline, poise, goal setting, work ethic and sportsmanship. Participants will also have the option of entering several youth tournaments that will take place near the end of the season. The program practices from December -February. Kids involved in other winter activities are still welcome to join the program and check out the sport of wrestling. Registrations began September 14 and continue until the program begins in December.
Scrap Booking Classes: Join the South Hadley Recreation Department and Creative Memories instructor Sue King for our newest class. Participants will learn the basics of scrap booking and will be provided with materials to construct the scrap book. These are perfect gifts for the holidays! Visit the Recreation Department office or its website additional information about the program for programs that begin in January.
Over 30 Men’s Basketball: South Hadley’s Over-30 Men’s Basketball program began Sunday, November 8 and will run into March 2010. Play will be held weekly on Sunday mornings from 8:30am – 10:30am in the South Hadley High School gymnasium. The playing format is pickup games that are divided onto two courts based on ability/age of the participant. If you are interested in playing, just show up on Sunday morning ready to play! The cost is $30 for residents and $35 for non-residents.
Celtics Bus Trip: Join the South Hadley Recreation Department on our annual trip to Bank North Garden to see the Boston Celtics play Big Al Jefferson and the Minnesota Timberwolves. This year’s trip will be held on Sunday, December 20 and will include motor coach transportation and a game ticket in section 308. The cost is $70 for residents and $75 for non-residents. The bus will depart at 2:30pm for the 6pm game.
Youth Lacrosse Registrations: Lacrosse registrations for boys and girls in grades 3-8 will begin Monday, January 4 and close Friday, January 29. Teams are broken down by gender and grade level and will involve travel to other parts of Western Mass and Connecticut. The season begins in late March and runs into June. More information will be available in late December on the Department’s website.
